I am originally from Ireland, a country shaped by division and conflict. Peace came only when our leaders sat down with those they had once accused and victimized, working through issues with a commitment to equal rights for all. Lasting peace cannot be achieved through military force or institutional segregation, but through freedom and mutual recognition only. Having lived through the brutality of sectarianism, I now see the same oppression inflicted upon the Palestinian people, but in even harsher and more systematic ways under a regime of apartheid. While we once witnessed the internment of civilians in Ireland, with around 2000 people imprisoned, today over 9,000 Palestinians, including hundreds of children, are held in Israeli jails.
My advocacy for Palestine began when I met my friend Atef in Lancaster. Through him, I discovered the rich culture and heritage of the Palestinian people. Their warmth and hospitality are unmatched, and I greatly admire the determination of the Palestinian students I've met, who seek education to empower their communities back home. This passion led me, along with friends in Lancaster, to establish our local branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign about 25 years ago.
The brutality of the Israeli occupation is staggering. From the destruction of homes and farms to the systematic dehumanization of an entire people, the atrocities are unconscionable. Yet, our government remains largely silent in defence of human rights, despite a history of championing such causes. The genocide occurring in Gaza is horrifying, compounded by our media's failure to report the truth, often relying on unverified information directly from Israeli government sources.
In Israel, thousands of people, like us, deplore the violence carried out in their name by their government. Organizations like Breaking the Silence, where soldiers speak out about the atrocities, and Refuseniks', young men and women who refuse to serve in the military, inspire hope. Human rights groups like B'Tselem and Gisha fight for Palestinian rights, while courageous journalists, such as Gideon Levy and the writers of +972 Magazine, challenge the Israeli government and amplify the Palestinian narrative.
One story that will always haunt me is the torment and murder of six-year-old Hind, who was brutally killed after witnessing her family's murder over ten agonizing hours. Stories like these are not isolated - they reflect the ongoing suffering of an entire people. My hope is that the world will come to its senses and recognize the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to freedom and self-determination. I long to see a free Palestine, where its people can finally enjoy the dignity, freedom, and rights that all humans deserve.
